If you are new to Suwon and looking for voulunteering, please email me!

As you can see, I have uploaded the post volunteering reports after weekly activities. However, what you see is only the tip of the iceberg. About 10 volunteers have become really close friends, work at the same place, share different hobbies, fun and dedicate themselves to the cause and this is not seen online.

Don't just leave should you look for some volunteering action in the city of Suwon. Get involved. Reach out.

Thank you.

Help Your Suwon Week 56 and 57

Current Balance : 182,244(302,195 - 3,850 - 116,170 + 69)

Previous Balance : 302,195
Newly Deposited : Week 56(30,000 - 33,850) = -3,850
                           Week 57(50,000 - 50,170 - 6,000 - 110,000[hats and gloves]) = -116,170
                            interest 69 won

Week 56 Recap
: We had a newcomer, John from South Africa. He came with a great deal of food such as hardboiled eggs, ramen, moonpie, capri sun, large sized milk and so forth. It was a big surprise. Because of his generosity, we were able to benefit many people. While giving away the food, we realized that they wanted gloves for Christmas.

Week 57 Recap
: Upon hearing that they wanted gloves, Rachael, Christi, Derrick and I marched down to the traditional market in Suwon to purchase hats and gloves. And, we did. It was cold out and yet our heart was not. We grabbed 25 hats and 25 pairs of gloves to keep them warm. I luckily haggled with the store owner and hammered out a shaveoff and an extra pair of baby gloves :)
: After Grace joined us, we headed to the station to do the routine. Then, there, we doled out the gloves and some hats at the shelter. With 60 bags of goodies in our hands, we went out again.
: Strangely enough, the majority of the people we came across last night was never seen by us. And, to be honest, that made us a bit hesitant to distribute the hats we were left with. The guy who asked for a pair of gloves was not their. Subsequently, we decided to leave the hats in the hands of the workers at the shelter, thinking that, after all, the guys at the shelter have checked themselves in with no sobriety issues. Now you know that one MUST pass the breathalyzer test upon entering the premises.
: I would be lying should I say I did not miss doing free hugs with ya'll. I hope those of you that have left the country still remember us and them at the same time. Thank you all for being part of this cause. I bid you a very Merry Christmas.

Can you believe that a year has passed since its commencement?
Last night, four us of (Rachael, Christi, Derrick and I) got together and celebrated over pepperoni pizza and coffee in Suwon. I wish there had been more people. It is okay that you could not make it. We all felt your presence in your absence. As I mentioned, the NGO office is available now. This mean, no more Lotteria. And hail to the shoes-free heated floor. Come out next weekend, if you could. Thank you everyone who has participated in the cause whether it is once or more.

In retrospect, it was all you. It was all you that helped form the group of more than 10 people and that always supported the cause with your roommate, your friends from the same country and from work. It was all you that always lift up the spirit and brought the zing to the group. And now, you are all gone.

Last week, I was standing by myself at the spot we always congregate. I was passed by hundreds of people that I don't know, waiting for some of you to arrive.

Luckily, I found the NGO office open back up at 6:30 pm. I guess it is time for us to bid a temporary goodbye to Lotteria.

Next week marks the 52th occasion of Help Your Suwon. Come and help us out.

Wow, it seems like it has been forever since I scribbled something here. I admit it I have been very much busy both in and out of the office. Anyhow, this past week, we were joined by two friends of Sarah and Melea. I hope they enjoyed our company. Next week, marks the half centennial occasion of Help Your Suwon and possibly the last participation of Amanda, Melea and Sarah (unless they come back to Suwon). So, come out and let us celebrate.

Weekly Report Help Your Suwon

There were timea when more than 10 people would come out and devote their time, energy and money to those in need on a random Sunday. And now, we are facing a major exodus in the not too distant future.

I admit my sluggishness for the past 4 weeks. I was busy at work, but I have been keeping track of everything and the transaction of the donation. For that, I apologize.

Last week, we celebrated Christi's birthday, coupled with Noraebang time and "cheesy" dak-gal-bi. Three weeks ago, I was there all by myself although Amanda and Abby showed up. And about a month, we wished Simon a safe trip to Canada.

Now, I need to think of how to fill up to void to be made and what to do for them during Chuseok. You are more than welcome to throw your constructive ideas this Sunday.

Thank you again all for your commitment. See you soon.

PSY and his underdog story

The world has cast its attention to a chubby Korean singer who was educated in the states previously and has an ability to carry a conversation in English. The former is no surprise, but the latter is not often witnessed in the Korean entertainment industry. And this is probably why he has come on many American tv shows without a translator next to him.

I don't need to place more emphasis on how popular he and his song(s) are around the world. But, I would like to say you one thing. That is, PSY always has been an underdog. And, this is why, I think, Korean public is more ecstatic about his success.

For one thing, he served in the military twice. Yes, you heard me right. How was that possible?

It is mandatory for Korean males to serve in the military for 18t months in many forms; Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps or Police and so forth. Nevertheless, if one has a severe condition(mental, physical or other) that prevents him from serving, you are either exempted or are, as an substitute, given a longer period to serve and yet much easier job to execute. For example, some with low eye vision spend longer than 18 months at a city hall, helping the locals with paper work, doing some chores. And yet, at the end of the day, they get to go home unlike those in the military. No deprivation of freedom. That's the biggest difference.

For this reason, some males get themselves involved in scams in order to dodge the draft. They manipulate their medical records, intentionally harm their bodies or hire some "broker" to pull some strings. After completing his time (not in jail),a prosecutor found out that he did not carry out his duties as diligently as possible, court ordered him to serve in the Army for 18 months again. And, he did.

Upon hearing the news, Koreans criticized him for being a fraud. Dodging the military service is severely frowned upon unless you have a very cogent and legitimate reason that everyone would give a nod to. And PSY's was not forgivable. And yet, he did his time. (Again, not in Jail) Twice. For that, people have forgiven him and even put him on the pedestal. Serving in the military once suffices. For kicks, Korean males after completing their service would say "I will not go through that again even if I get paid 100 million won." But PSY did. And thus, he had a much longer void in his career compared to other males singers. Even worse, PSY was not an idol star, so people started to forget about him. And, boom, Gangnam Style was the game changer and no one knew it was going to be this way.

Secondly, PSY and his songs did not quite spawn feverish fandom before. His previous songs or his performances, however, were popular because they were somewhat different. In particular, his choreography was sensational. But, it was not like when his album was coming out, there was a buzz and everyone was waiting for it. People tended to think "Ah.. PSY is coming back. Good. What kind of choreography is he going to exhibit this time" Then, he would come out on tv shows, show to the public what he has prepared and be forgotten as time goes by.

Yes, he was one of those singers that everyone would remember and enjoy, but not that would not create much of popularity. Or should I say, I would not put his songs onto my Iphone.I would not say it is because his songs, his performances or even himself come off a bit "light" and "hollow". But there was no magnitudes that catches everyone's attention unlike some other singers.

And yet, he did not give up on his dream and music. Being a father of twin daughters, (maybe this has served as his motif), he kept on evolving. Signing with one of the major labels (YG which manages 2NE1, BIG BANG and so forth), he would always follow his path with or without any acknowledgement from the public.

At last, Gangnam Style hit the jackpot. This sensation or his success is beyond one's imagination and description. No one expected that Gangnam Style would strike the chord of, literally, everyone in the whole world. The secrete, I do not know.

Even so, the images that he has shown recently on tv or in mags such as Rolling Stones, are nothing but down to earth and humble. Maybe this is because he has gone through a lot of hardships and knows the key to success and how to handle it with poise and humility. This is somewhat more surprising.

It is nearly impossible to disassociate military service with Korean society. Korean males say "He is the man" not because of his success, but because of the fact that he served twice. And, PSY knows it better than anyone else. Even his lyric of Gangman Style says "I am da man"

It was raining, but it was not cool at all. The climate was not volunteering friendly at all. And yet, we came out and as always executed our missions. For that, I thank thee. Also, I would like to express my gratitude for congratulating my birthday even though everyone was very much fatigued from party-hardy :) I guess, out of last week's experience, we all learned a very valuable lesson ; Starbucks is way better than Twosome Place on every single level. I hope to see you all this Sunday.

Last week remarks the last day of Stephanie. In this light, we all gathered, did our usual routine, ate dinner, did cake and caught up with each other. It almost breaks my heart to see a member of us leave the group. Before Derrick left last year, he signed on the Hall of Fame vest and he ended up coming back. And this past Sunday, Stephanie also left her autograph on it. Maybe it is the jinx. Maybe not. So long, Stephanie. I wish the best and may the Force be with you.

What can I say more about the occasion? Though it was so humid and hot, we all executed what we were supposed to. Then, it was followed by some burgers and smoothies at the station. Then, we proceeded upstairs to watch one of the best trilogies in the film history. Oh.. it was mind-blowing, inspiring and very enjoyable. Thank you everyone for making it and keeping your promises. For those, who were absent because you were taking a vacation, I hope we relished it to the fullest and that we reunite this weekend.

It rained. Well, to be specific, it drizzled. And yet, five of us was not hindered by it at all. More people than usual were inhabiting both the station and the adjacent areas and thus we were short of food, unluckily. Last week was probably one and only week there was no afterwards activity except for dinner. No coffee or chichat at either Starbucks or Two Some. Maybe next week. Oh, wait. Some of us are going to watch "The Dark Night Rises" together. I can not wait. Time to go over the previous two episodes. See you next week.

Rachael, Stephanie and Simion, I need to thank you for having showed up two weeks ago when I was absent. You folks did more than you should have and spent more than we usually do. And yet you did not ask for anything in return. I can't thank thee enough for your kindness and dedication.

Last week, it has been awhile since there were 10 of us showed up since last time. It was always good to be in good company. Though it was hot and humid, no one caviled. Thank you for your patience, everyone. We failed to purchase the right amount of food for them. Sometimes it is not easy to estimate the exact need. And today, it has been raining, so I personally am inquisitive if there is going to be as many homeless as there used to be. I see you guys in hours, though. If you can't come, that's fine too. There is always next time.

Current Balance : 216,226 won
Previous Balance : 212,950 won
Newly Deposited : 3,276 won(30,000 - 26,800 + 56(interest))

Just as the previous week, only a number of us showed up. I thank thee, Rachael and Stephanie. We managed to purchase 16 bags of each and handed them over. However, something was quite different. While we were strolling over the benched near the shelter, some one yelled "Yo!" I doubted my ear, thinking that someone was calling us out "여기~요" and I missed the first two syllables. We all ceased, turned around and looked at the person. It was one of homeless and yes he did yell "Yo" Much to our surprise, we gave one back to him, in return we heard "Thank you"

After the occurrence, the three musketeers had a good laugh. On top of him, we also had a guy sitting in front the steps of the station that repeated "Thank you". When we embarked upon the small resting area on the left side of the station we were met by several and failed to fulfill their palate due to the lack of the food. And yet, this one gentleman given a bag from us was generous enough to yield his to the one and only lady in the group. You would all recognize her face, by the way. As one of us proclaimed, chivalry is not quite dead yet.

Come out this weekend and let's share such wonderful experience with us, ya'll.

Last week, only 2 people showed up. But we managed to distribute 16 bags. It was not enough to cover the rest of the group. But hopefully this week, I see more people. I personally thank Grace for showing up at the last minute :)

Speaking of change in time, I talked to the manager and he said that until the end of August, only on Sundays and holidays, the new operation hours will take effect. At time point, I think that it is unnecessary for us to change our hours from 6:00pm to 8pm. As we improvised last week, there are places in the vicinity where we can repeat what we have been doing so far. At any rate, thank you all for coming and see you this weekend.

Help Your Suwon Week 28 and Help Your Buddha

Current Balance : 182,570 won

Previous Balance : 241,100 won ( 241,020 + 80 won (I miscalculated so added the margin)
Newly Deposited : -58,530 won (60,000 won - 6,650 won - 52,000 won[Help Your Buddha dinner])

Before I begin, I would like to tell you that last week I miscalculated the change and thus added the missing 80 won to the account. Also, since we spent more money than we gathered (60,000 won) this weekend, I paid for it and that is why I transferred 6,530 won to mine. And, for Help Your Buddha day, the members in the presence concurred to using the fund since it is for our own cause, boosting camaraderie. The total was 52,000 won and I paid for it on behalf of everyone and this is why I also subtracted the money from the fund. I hope everyone understands the situation. If you think you have qualms, please feel free to tell me and the others.

This past Sunday, we managed to buy 32 of each and the majority of them was given away. We were joined by another new comer hailing from Daejeon. I am very much pleased to see new blood joining the cause.

Speaking of yesterday, I can't thank you enough for showing up and supporting the gathering although the weather could not be worse. Raining and hailing was a real party pooper. And yet, Maeve, Derrick and ChristI decided to stay, go to the secretly nestled temple and Stephanie and Rachael came with a set of delightful games that we play over 팥빙수. And, I am not leaving you out, Grace who, albeit exhausted from singing a birthday song to her 70 year young grandmother for her birthday, still participated.

Next time, in Suji or Bundang, the same or more varigated repertoire (maybe a movie as well)
